About this blog...

Dear Reader,

When I write a book review on GoodReads, it auto-publishes here. Click the link to follow: JoAnn Chateau on GoodReads.

My book reviews are short. Possibly rare. Always an independent view. My rating is as follows:
  1. ⭐ = Horrible. I couldn't finish reading it.
  2. ⭐⭐ = Bad. I read to the end, but will never read that author again.
  3. ⭐⭐⭐ = Fair. I'm willing to read more from this competent author.
  4. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ = Good. I enjoyed the book, or thought it was significant. Would recommend.
  5. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ = Excellent. Highly recommended. Well-written and important. A book to be read more than once.

I have full-fledged blogs at Progressive Graffiti and Friends in DC. I blog about left-wing policies, candidates, and lifestyle. My reading material includes these topics.

You are now duly warned.

Sincerely,
JoAnn Chateau

Not for Profit: Why Democracy Needs the Humanities Not for Profit: Why Democracy Needs the Humanities by Martha C. Nussbaum
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Several years ago, I read "Not for Profit: Why Democracy Needs the Humanities." It made an impression on me. I've been paraphrasing it ever since.

Review: Understanding Socialism

Understanding Socialism Understanding Socialism by Richard D. Wolff
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The essential framework is there, but the concept of socialism isn't fleshed out. Wolff conveys important insights regarding modern socialism, but I would have liked more detail and expansion of the ideas. Prof. Wolff is an excellent speaker and teacher... to listen to. His books? Too concentrated to digest fully.
